How to find out what a house last sold for

Where to look up a property's sales history in Australia, from free property portals to official government sales data in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, and the limits of each.

The quick way: free property profiles

realestate.com.au and Domain both have a page for most Australian addresses showing past sale prices and an automated estimate. Domain’s profiles also show rental history. They’re free and fast, but they depend on prices being reported, so some sales show as “price withheld” or are missing.

The official records, state by state

VictoriaLANDATA sells a Sales History Report for an address. Land Use Victoria publishes free suburb medians, quarterly and yearly.A few dollars ($2.64 in 2026–27)
QueenslandThe Valuer-General sells sale reports for a property, through business centres or 13 QGOV. There’s no free government search.A fee applies

Know the limits

  • There’s a lag. Government records take weeks to catch up after settlement: in NSW, usually within about eight weeks.
  • Some prices are withheld on the portals until official data catches up.
  • Estimates aren’t valuations. Automated estimates are a guide, not a figure to base an offer on.

In Victoria, the agent has to tell you

Victorian agents must give buyers an indicative price (or a range of no more than 10%), three comparable sales and the suburb median. From October 2026 this document is called the Property Price Statement, and for auctions the reserve price must be published 7 days before the sale.

Look at the sale history of the house itself and the sales of similar homes nearby. A price from 1994 tells you less than three sales on the same street last year.

How MapView helps

MapView’s Sales History topic lists every recorded sale and rental for an address, newest first, and pins the prices on the map. The Suburb Market topic shows median prices by number of bedrooms for the suburb.

Common questions

Why doesn't a recent sale show up yet?

Official records lag behind settlement. In NSW, sales data usually arrives within about eight weeks of settlement, and portals depend on that data or on the agent reporting the price.

Why does it say 'price withheld'?

Some sellers and agents choose not to publish the price. The sale still appears in official government records once they're updated.

What must a Victorian agent tell me about prices?

Agents must provide an indicative price or a range of no more than 10%, three comparable sales and the suburb median. From October 2026 this document is called the Property Price Statement, replacing the Statement of Information.

Are online price estimates accurate?

They're automated guides based on past sales, not valuations. Use them to get a feel for a suburb, not to decide what to offer.

This guide is general information, not legal or financial advice. Rules and official tools change, so check the sources below and talk to your conveyancer or solicitor before you commit.
